What do I mean
by the Gentle Arts?
It starts with
taking raw materials and truning them into something both useful
and beautiful at the same time.
Sewing, knitting,
crocheting, tatting, weaving, embrodery, crosstitch, quilting,
quilling, macrome, beading, etc.
and the kitchen arts of baking a good loaf or decorating a cake.
Some call them
crafts, but I refer to them as the "gentle arts" because
they can reflect one's personal personality, craftsmanship, and
style while producing something useful.
Many of these arts
are becoming lost skills. They are rarely taught in schools, not
even in the disappearing art classes (home economics is a thing
of the past).
To me, it is sad
to think that our children and grandchildren won't know how to
do these simple things for themselves, but will be dependent on
machines and those few who keep the traditions and skills alive
for the "gentler" things in life.
